5 Signs Your Home Security Is Weaker Than You Think (SE Tennessee Edition)

Most homeowners in Hamilton, Bradley, McMinn, and surrounding SE Tennessee counties feel reasonably secure. They have locks on the doors, maybe a camera or two, and a neighborhood they trust. But feeling secure and being secure are two very different things.

Here are five signs your home security may be weaker than you think — and what to do about it.

1. Your Strike Plates Are Held In by Short Screws

This is the single most common vulnerability we find during residential assessments across SE Tennessee. A door can look solid — good deadbolt, quality hardware — but if the strike plate is only anchored with ¾" screws into the door frame, one solid kick is enough to pop it open.

The fix is simple: replace those screws with 3" screws that reach the wall stud behind the frame. It takes 10 minutes and costs about $8 in hardware. But most homeowners never know to look for it.

2. Your Exterior Lighting Has Blind Spots

Criminals don't avoid well-lit homes by accident — they look for dark corners, unlit side gates, and shadowed garage approaches. If your exterior lighting only covers the front door, you likely have significant blind spots that make your property an easier target.

Walk your property at night and look for areas where someone could approach without being illuminated. Pay special attention to side yards, back gates, and the path between your garage and your home's entry.

3. Your Cameras Cover What You Can See — Not What Matters

Many homeowners install cameras aimed at the front door and driveway. That's a start. But the most common entry points for residential break-ins are side doors, back doors, and first-floor windows — areas that often go uncovered.

A professional assessment maps your camera coverage against your actual entry points and identifies the gaps. It's not about having more cameras — it's about having the right coverage.

4. Your Sliding Doors and Windows Rely on Factory Latches

Factory latches on sliding glass doors and windows are notoriously easy to defeat. A simple lift-and-slide technique can bypass many standard latches in seconds. Secondary blocking bars or pin locks are inexpensive and dramatically increase resistance.

If your sliding doors and windows are secured only by their original hardware, this is a vulnerability worth addressing.

5. You've Never Had a Professional Walk Your Property

The most honest sign that your security posture may have gaps? You've never had an expert look at it. Most people set up their security based on what they can see — but criminals look for what you can't.

A professional residential security assessment gives you an objective, expert view of your home's vulnerabilities — the same view a criminal would have — along with a prioritized, actionable plan to close every gap.
